Sintered Metal Spline Coupling
(Click on thumbnail to enlarge) |
Precision Powdered Metal Parts, Inc.'s Colorado Sintered Metals facility in Colorado Springs, fabricated these P/M spline couplings suitable for high torque applications in freight car emergency hand brakes. These parts were fabricated through powdered metal compaction, sintering, and copper infiltration. Molding tools for our 300-ton press were designed in-house according to exact customer specifications. Our powdered metal compaction process facilitated the production of parts with uniform dimensions and enabled us to maintain tolerances close to 0.003". In addition, the sintering and copper infiltration process enhanced the mechanical and physical properties of the P/M parts. Made from copper infiltrated steel, the parts have a density of 7.3 gms/cc and surface roughness of 32 RMS. Typically about 25,000 parts are produced annually with eight weeks production lead-time and require no secondary processing.
